The Charité Center for Global Health (CCGH), in partnership with the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, is proud to announce the launch of its first Research Fellowship Program, set to commence in 2025. This exciting initiative aims to bring together experienced researchers from across the globe to engage in applied research that enhances our understanding of pandemic and epidemic risks, helping shape more effective responses to health emergencies.
The fellowship is designed for mid- to senior-career researchers, though exceptional early-career postdoctoral researchers with relevant expertise are also encouraged to apply. Fellows will be hosted in Berlin, Germany, and will spend up to six months (June to December 2025) working jointly with both CCGH and the WHO Pandemic Hub.
During this time, fellows will work on self-proposed research projects that align with key public health intelligence themes and the program’s priority areas. They will benefit from strong mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and access to Berlin’s vibrant global health community—laying the groundwork for future partnerships and impactful research.
The fellowship is open to:
Postdoctoral researchers with mid (5–15 years) to senior-level (15+ years) research experience
Candidates from any discipline, including those outside the health sector, if their work contributes to public health intelligence
Individuals with a proven track record in relevant research areas
Applicants with strong English proficiency (minimum C1 level)
Those holding a permanent or fixed-term academic position, or applying independently
Applicants must propose research aligned with one or more of the following priority areas:
Artificial Intelligence and Technological Innovations
Data Readiness and Infrastructure
Analytical Models and Frameworks
Cross-sectoral Approaches to Health Intelligence
Other themes under the WHO’s public health intelligence research priorities
For more details on focus areas and sample research questions, refer to the official fellowship site.
Selected fellows will:
Contribute to cutting-edge global health research
Collaborate with experts from WHO and CCGH
Network within Berlin’s diverse health research ecosystem
Work in an innovation-friendly environment that fosters new thinking
Fellows will co-develop deliverables during their stay, which may include:
Peer-reviewed journal articles
WHO technical reports
Research-based grant proposals
Interactive tools like dashboards, models, or policy briefs
These outputs will be defined in collaboration with the host institutions to ensure strategic alignment.
Fellows will receive comprehensive financial support, including:
A living allowance based on German public sector pay scales (up to E14, Level 2)
Travel support, including funding for one conference in Europe
Publication funding for one peer-reviewed article
Reimbursement for health insurance costs
Please note that the fellowship does not cover additional research costs, and all funding is subject to Charité’s institutional policies.
