Participants will collaborate on research, develop tools, and contribute to efforts that promote internet freedom.

Fellows will work full-time with a host organization of their choice and may opt for remote work arrangements. This flexible structure makes it an ideal opportunity for those looking to gain valuable research experience while receiving a paid fellowship. The ICFP 2025 is open to researchers, postdoctoral and doctoral students, and professionals from diverse disciplines.

Fellowship Details

The ICFP offers fellowships with durations ranging from three to twelve months, providing generous financial support. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $7,000, a travel stipend based on fellowship duration (ranging from $1,250 to $5,000), and an equipment stipend (ranging from $1,250 to $5,000). Fellows can work with both academic and non-academic host organizations, including those outside the United States. In addition to working full-time, participants are encouraged to contribute to important areas of research such as monitoring and analyzing internet censorship, exploring information controls on platforms like social media, search engines, and messaging apps, and ensuring the security and privacy of online activities.

  • Applicants must be committed to advancing online freedoms, including freedom of expression and assembly, and tackling challenges related to internet censorship.
  • Applicants must work full-time with their host organization, with a clear communication plan if opting for remote work.
  • Applicants from countries under US trade restrictions or export sanctions are ineligible.

Application Process

To apply for the Information Controls Fellowship Program 2025, applicants must submit their application through the OTF’s online platform. The process consists of two stages:

  1. Stage 1: Submit a concise concept note via the online platform.
  2. Stage 2: Shortlisted candidates with competitive concept notes will be invited to submit a detailed proposal, including collaboration details with their chosen host organization.

The deadline for applications is February 28, 2025.
