Bridge to Asia Fellowship: A Premier Opportunity for Future Asia Policy Leaders

The Bridge to Asia Fellowship is an esteemed program offered by the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), aimed at undergraduate and community college students with a keen interest in Asia policy and international affairs. Fellowship Structure

  1. Orientation Month (Remote – May 2025) Prior to the in-person residency, fellows will engage in remote training sessions (5–10 hours per week) covering:

    • An introduction to NBR’s research focus and workplace culture.
    • Setting personal and professional goals.
    • Virtual events and policy discussions.
    • Networking with mentors and supervisors.

  2. Summer Residency (In-Person – June–August 2025) Fellows will join NBR research teams in Washington, D.C., or Seattle, WA. This on-site experience provides practical exposure to:

    • Policy research and writing.
    • Project management and event planning.
    • Publication support and editorial work.
    • Networking with industry leaders at think tank events.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Bridge to Asia Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate (first-year, sophomore, or junior) or community college student.
  • Have a strong interest in Asia and U.S. foreign policy.
  • Be willing to relocate to Washington, D.C. or Seattle, WA for the summer residency (or already live in one of these locations).

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following materials via the NBR application portal:

  • Three short essays (250 words max per essay):
    1. How did you become interested in Asia and foreign policy? What topics interest you most?
    2. Describe your background and experiences that have shaped your worldview.
    3. How would this fellowship help advance your career goals?
  • Supplemental questions related to location preference, relevant experience, and language skills.
  • Unofficial transcript from your current institution.
  • Resume or activity list highlighting relevant experiences.
  • Two letters of support:
    • Academic reference (professor, advisor, or instructor).
    • Character reference (mentor, supervisor, or community leader).

Incomplete applications will not be considered.
