The British Academy International Fellowships 2025 offer a remarkable opportunity for early-career researchers worldwide to conduct high-quality, original research at UK institutions. This two-year fellowship program, jointly run by the British Academy and the Royal Society, aims to attract and retain emerging talent in the UK, fostering a globally connected and mobile research and innovation workforce.
The International Fellowships are designed to support outstanding early-career researchers in developing independent research careers through international experience. Fellows will engage in a specific and protected research focus, undertaking high-quality, original research across various disciplines.
Funding: The fellowship covers 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) of the research for two years. Applicants may request up to £12,000 for research expenses and up to £8,000 for relocation costs, both of which must be justified in the application.
Professional Development: Fellows will have opportunities to acquire and transfer new skills and knowledge through training and career development, fostering long-term relationships through networking opportunities and the International Fellowships alumni program.
Applicants must:
Hold a PhD or be in the final stages of their PhD, with completion (including viva) before the fellowship start date.
Have no more than seven years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application, excluding career breaks but including teaching experience and time spent in industry.
Be working outside the UK and not hold UK citizenship.
Be proficient in oral and written English.
Have a clearly defined and mutually beneficial research proposal agreed upon with a UK host researcher.
Identify a UK Host: Secure a UK-based researcher who will act as your sponsor and collaborate on your research proposal.
Prepare Application Materials: Develop a detailed research proposal, update your curriculum vitae (CV), and obtain supporting statements from your UK sponsor, the sponsor’s Head of Department, and two referees.
Submit Application: Complete and submit your application through the British Academy’s online grant management system by 5:00 pm (GMT) on March 18, 2025.
Application Deadline: March 18, 2025, at 5:00 pm GMT.
Earliest Fellowship Start Date: October 1, 2025.
